You may have heard that the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) has notified the College Employer Council that they may begin a legal strike as early as Monday, October 16 if a contract settlement is not reached beforehand. This would impact full-time and partial-load faculty at Loyalist and all other Ontario colleges.
While OPSEU and the College Employer Council could still reach an agreement before the strike deadline, if an agreement is not reached before Sunday at midnight, a strike will begin on Monday, October 16, at 12:01 am.
In the event of a strike, no regular daytime classes will be held for post-secondary or apprentices. Some online courses and Continuing Education classes will continue. Go to loyalistfocus.com for more information.
The College has comprehensive contingency plans in place, including semester completion plans. Details regarding specific plans will be communicated if a strike occurs.
Please check for Faculty Negotiations Updates on the College website at http://www.loyalistcollege.com/labour-negotiation-updates/, as well as your College email for any updates.
Loyalist College is committed to supporting you and your success. It is important to note that no student has ever lost their academic year due to a strike, in the College’s 50-year history.
In the event of a strike, Loyalist will remain open for student and community use. I encourage you to come to the College and use the library, computer labs, and other learning resources, and to work with fellow students on assignments.
